Inmate Information and Records

Limited inmate information is available to the public such as inmate location/address and anticipated release dates. This information can be obtained by calling the Inmate Locator Desk during business hours at (804) 674-3131. If you are looking for information concerning an offender's projected release date or a time computation issue, please call (804) 887-8329. The inmate's identification number is needed in order to obtain this information. However, an inquiry can be made if the inmate's full name and date of birth are provided.

Criminal Records are maintained for all inmates in active confinement and on active parole. In accordance with the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, certain types of information may be provided to the general public, with an inmate's written permission, for a nominal fee. Requests for documents must be made in writing.

If you have questions regarding access to documents contained in an inmate's file, please contact the Central Criminal Records Manager. E-mail requests for records will not be accepted in lieu of written correspondence with original signatures.

The Virginia Department of Corrections does not perform criminal background checks. Please contact (external website) the Virginia State Police, for any prior criminal history, criminal records check, or information on offenders who are no longer under the supervision of this Department.

To find the location of a currently incarcerated inmate, use the (external website) Incarcerated Offender Locator. You will need to have either the inmates' Department of Corrections' six or seven digit identification number or their exact last name, first name and middle name or initial if known.
