Virginia Department of Corrections — Public Safety First

Board of Corrections

The Board of Corrections is a nine-member, policy-making Board appointed by the Governor subject to confirmation by the General Assembly. Appointees to this Board are selected based on qualifications and experience, which enable the membership to act upon various matters under their purview. Appointments are for four-year terms (see on external website - Code Section 53.1-2).

The Department's Mission Statement was approved by the Board in February, 1998: The Department of Corrections enhances public safety by controlling and supervising sentenced offenders in a humane, cost-efficient manner, consistent with sound correctional principles and constitutional standards.
