Pocahontas State Correctional Center employees help provide sneakers and toys for all students at Abbs Valley Elementary School
RICHMOND — The Virginia Department of Corrections announced today that Pocahontas State Correctional Center joined with Abbs Valley Elementary School through their "Partners in Education" program to provide all 150 students enrolled at the school with athletic shoes and a toy for Christmas.
The athletic shoes further this year's goals of getting students off the couch and away from the television and encouraging as much physical fitness as possible.
"The smiles on those kids' faces when Santa gives them their presents are unbelievable," said Pocahontas State Warden Stan Young. "Our employees worked hard to make 2012 the best year yet for the students at Abbs Valley Elementary School."
Pocahontas State staff, with help from community donations, raised the necessary funds to purchase the shoes and toys. The students were given their presents today at the school in Boissevain, Virginia.
In 2009 the "Partners in Education" program provided Abbs Valley students with helmets and 25 bicycles. In 2010 the students were given gifts of hats, gloves, jump ropes, and a dodge ball. Last year the students received winter coats and sleds.
