RICHMOND - As reported yesterday, at approximately 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 14, a Virginia Department of Corrections divertee transportation vehicle was involved in a single vehicle accident at the intersection of Route 301 and Route 3 in King George County, resulting in the death of the vehicle’s driver, a Department employee.

The vehicle was transporting nine divertees back from a worksite in the Stafford area. All nine were taken to area hospitals; four have been released following treatment and five remain hospitalized.

The Department is deeply saddened by the death of Stafford Diversion Center driver James Toombs. “Our thoughts are with Mr. Toombs’ wife and family and our hearts go out to them,” said VADOC Director Harold Clarke.
