Secure Diversionary Treatment Program – Art and Emotions Group

  • Description

    Recreation staff and psychology associate will collaborative offer a program utilizing artistic expression. Mental health offenders often have difficulty articulating their thoughts and feelings. This program provides another outlet for their self-expression. Recreation staff encourages offender engagement and the psychology associate uses the artwork to discuss feelings and gauge offenders’ level of progress. This program is part of the Secure Diversionary Treatment Program (SDTP) for Serious Mental Illness (SMI) Offenders. SDTP is designed to provide a secure and safe alternative treatment option for offenders with a major mental illness who otherwise would be in restrictive housing because behavior that may be considered a threat to safety and security of staff or other offenders. Offenders who qualify often exhibit behaviors that are intractable and unresponsive to the usual therapeutic and management interventions available in the regular general population setting.
