    Description

    This training teaches people how to give recovery support to others. Trainers are people who have gone through recovery themselves from mental health struggles or substance use. The goal is to help others stay healthy and lower the chances of returning to prison.

    The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) runs this program. It is a 72-hour course with 60 hours in class (or online) and 12 hours of homework. Training covers:

    • Wellness and healthy living
    • Good communication
    • How to give support
    • Building trust
    • Handling tough situations
    • Ethics (doing what is right)

    Eligibility

    • Must be free from substance use or mental health problems for at least 12 months • Or, have supported a close family member with these challenges for at least 12 months • Must have a high school diploma or GED • Must meet rules in the VADOC PRS Program manual
