The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) is a federal law intended to prevent, detect, and address sexual abuse of inmates and probationers. It applies to all levels of adult prisons and jails, juvenile confinement facilities, lockups, and community confinement facilities. Learn more about our zero-tolerance policy regarding PREA in Operating Procedure 038.3.

Each year, our staff compiles and analyzes the call volume reporting sexual abuse, investigations, resolutions, and additional measures taken to detect and prevent abuse.

Survey of Sexual Victimization

This survey is part of the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ National Prison Rape Statistics Program. It gathers data on the prevalence of sexual assault in correctional facilities.
