Description
The Commercial Motor Vehicle Driving Training Program enables students to receive a Class B Commercial Driver’s License issued by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. This class of license permits individuals to operate a single vehicle, excluding tractor-trailers, with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more. Students receive 40 hours of classroom instruction which includes use of a driving simulator and behind-the-wheel skills training while driving a commercial motor vehicle on public highways. The program complies with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) regulations (49 CFR Part 380).
Course Requirements:
Students participating in the program must qualify for a Department of Transportation Medical Examiner Certificate issued by a medical professional listed on the FMCSA National Registry of Medical Examiners. They must also undergo testing for controlled substances in accordance with FMCSA regulations and pass a knowledge exam administered by DMV to obtain their CDL learner’s permit. At the conclusion of training, students must successfully complete a skills test administered by DMV, which then allows them to receive their CDL.
